Manson Boys Basketball vs Bridgeport 2-18-13

E-mail Print PDF
manson_trojans_logoIn a heartbreaker, the Manson boys couldn’t quite overcome Bridgeport and lost 50-41 in overtime for the winner to regionals/loser-out contest at Wenatchee HS.  Every game this season with Bridgeport was a battle to the very end and for whatever reason we could never get over the hump.  The game mirrored the Liberty Bell game as a poor 3rd quarter was again our undoing, followed by a furious 4th quarter rally to tie the game at 40 at the end of regulation.  Paul Toolson got out of a mini-slump to hit two big 4th quarter 3 pointers and Salvador Leyva was relentless in his attacking of the basket.

I couldn’t be more proud of this group of guys.  Although it is difficult to swallow two extremely close losses our guys did everything we asked of them.  They put together their two best team defensive efforts and committed a season-low 8 turnovers against Bridgeport.  Unfortunately, Bridgeport shot 90% from the free throw line, in contrast to our 50% and that proved to be the difference.

As the sting of the losses has begun to subside our guys have a lot to be proud of this season.  There were little expectations for this group of guys with only minimal varsity experience and a last-minute brand new coach.  But it was exciting to see a group of individuals come together and gel into such a cohesive unit.  And as they began to rely on each other they began to experience success.  I am so proud of our 5 seniors: Jesus Sanchez, Olegario Orozco, Jesse Russell, Salvador Leyva, and Paul Toolson.  This group will be remembered as the team that jumpstarted the Manson Boys Basketball Program.  Their effort, competitive drive, and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good of the team have motivated the younger guys to achieve even greater heights.

It was an honor to coach this team and I want to thank all the parents and community members who got behind this team.

Coach Helleson.

PS

Notable Stats:  Paul Toolson: 14 points; Jesus Sanchez:  4 points, 4 steals (incredible individual defensive effort); Alex Vanderholm: 8 points, 12 rebounds; Salvador Leyva: 10 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals

SPORTS REPORT

Score: 48-45

Date: 02/09/13 Place: Manson

manson_trojans_logoRecord – League/Overall:  12-8 (7-5 league)

1st Round of Districts, Loser Out

Alex Vanderholm: 17 points, 6 rebounds; Salvador Leyva: 8 points, 12 rebounds, Olegario Orozco: 15 points, 4 assists, 3 steals, Willy Picton 7 points, 6 rebounds

14 steals, 28 turnovers, 38% FT shooting

You are not supposed to win games where you have season-high 28 turnovers and 38% shooting from the free throw line (10-26), but we found a way to survive and advance to the final four of districts. A casual observer would point to all the flaws our team demonstrated, but I would point them to the individual stories of conquering adversity that collectively allowed us to climb out of a double digit deficit and advance to the next round in the playoffs. Examples would include Salvador Leyva struggling mightily at the offensive end, but he never let that affect his tenacity on the glass and with his pressure defense. Alex Vanderholm dominated inside despite periodically facing a man twice his size. Olegario Orozco overcame his turnovers while playing out of position to hit some huge outside shots and provide quiet leadership urging his team to never give up. Willy Picton came off the bench to provide a defensive spark and even contribute 7 points, including two clutch free throws in the final frame. The stories could continue 12 deep. I was really proud of the resiliency and determination demonstrated by this group and they deserve to move on to the next round of the playoffs!

Next Game: 2/12 against Liberty Bell @ Wenatchee

Manson Girls Basketball vs Riverside Christian 2-7-13

manson_trojans_logoThe Manson girls basketball team went down to defeat in their last game of the season, 49-21, against the highly rated Riverside Christian team.  RC used their superior size and shooting to jump out to an early lead that never was threatened.  Boasting a line up of 3 sisters that are all 6' tall, the Crusaders dominated in all phases of the game.

Manson played well, considering the level of competition they were facing.  I thought we did a pretty good job against their press and running our offense.  Our rebounding was aggressive despite the size deficet we faced.  The girls did well in playing with great effort the whole game even though we trailed by double digits most of the time.

Like many of our games this year, we were lead in scoring by Itzel Castro with 13.  She also had 4 steals.  Jacque Guillen also had a nice game, scoring 7.  Raechel Vanderholm scored 4 to go along with 10 rebounds.

I thought the girls showed a lot of improvement over last year, in effort, attitude, and basketball skill.  We did not win as many games as we would have liked but I consider the season a success considering where we started from and playing many of the games short handed due to injuries or eligibility issues.

I wanted to thank all of the community and student body for their outstanding support this year.  I know the girls recongized how much support we got from the fans  Kudos also go to Mr. Brown and the pep band.  They are easily the best band in the district.  One last shout out goes to Mrs. Hodges and the cheerleaders.  We also appreciated their efforts.

I definitely should thank the scorekeepers, clock operators, and anyone else who helped with the logistics of the season.

Until next year,
Kurt Toolson
Mey Broome
Jim Broome
