Manson Track at Cheney 5-26-13

E-mail Print PDF

manson_trojans_logoThe Manson track team took a sizable contingent to Cheney this past weekend to compete in the final meet of the season- the state championships.  As it often is with track meets, it was a mixed bag of results.  The weather was mediocre at best for the competition- breezy, cool, and often times rainy.

Friday competition began with the boys shot put.  We had Alex Vanderholm and Kelly McClellan competing.  Unfortunately, neither was at their best this day, both falling short of their previous best efforts.  Alex advanced into the finals but was unable to improve his position by the final throw and ended up in 9th place, just out of the medals.

The boys and girls 4x100 relays were next up.  The boys ran a fairly clean race and ran close to their best time of the season.  However, the quality of the competition was just too much to overcome and the finished in 13th place overall in a time of 46.61.  We had high hopes for the girls team, as they were ranked 7th going into the competition and landing on the medal podium seemed a real possibility.  Unfortunately, they seemed just a bit out of sync, both running and with their exchanges, and ended up in 13th place, almost 2 seconds slower than their time from last week.

Ruby Garcia and Raechel Vanderholm were entered in the discus.  Both seemed a little out of rythmn and were not able to match their best efforts from earlier in the year.

Paul Toolson then competed in the 400m.  We knew it would be a long shot for him to qualify for the finals, as the top 8 times were more the second ahead of his best time.  This proved to be the case, as Paul ran well, but still ended up in 12th place.

Itzel Castro had the bad luck to have to run her 200m in a downpour.  She competed hard and ran well, but still finished in 14th place.

The last event of the first day was the girls 4x400 relay.  The girls ran very well, breaking their school record by almost 5 seconds.  Unfortunately, it was not good enough to move on to the finals and they finished 12th overall.  Still a good effort though.

Day 2 of competition was much more memorable.  It began with Paul Toolson in the triple jump.  Paul was ranked 12th going in and outperformed his ranking by finishing up in 7th place and picking up 2 team points in the process.  Paul had been battling a leg injury the past month of the season that limited his jumping, so to see him overcome this and jump to a pr and place at the state meet was very satisfying.

The last Manson athlete to compete was Alex Vanderholm in the discus.  Alex was ranked second going in and we knew if things fell just right he had a shot at winning the competition.  And that is exactly what happened.  On his first throw, he threw a new pr of 150' that really put the pressure on the competition.  Then, in the first throw of finals he unleashed a huge throw of 154'3" to extend his lead even further.  The competition was unable to even come close to his marks, as he ended up winning by 10' and taking home the first place medal.  It also collected 10 points for the team.

The boys team ended up with 12 points total, good enough for 17th place.

All in all, it was an outstanding season and the kids did everything we asked of them.  Thank you to the parents and others who supported the team throughout the year.

UPDATE:

The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office is releasing the name of the individual who drowned while attempting to raft a portion of Class 5 rapids on the Wenatchee River in Tumwater Canyon Saturday afternoon. Kenneth E. Tyson (54yoa) of Newport, OR died after being ejected out of his ‘Creature Craft’ raft and into the rapids. Tyson also shows a residence in Vancouver, WA.

===========

Sheriff Brian Burnett reports a male subject has drowned while attempting to navigate a portion of white water rapids of the Wenatchee River in Tumwater Canyon on Saturday afternoon. The incident was reported to RIVERCOM dispatch at 4:09pm by a witness to the incident. The victim was ejected out of his single person ‘Creature Craft’ white water raft while navigating through 5+ level rapids near milepost 94 of Highway 2. He was with a group of other white water rafters in similar vessels.

After being ejected, the subject was observed attempting to swim downstream through the rapids, but witnesses lost sight of him shortly thereafter. Fellow rafters located the victim unconscious and unresponsive in an eddy downriver near the west bank of the river. They immediately pulled him into another raft and initiated CPR while floating over to the east side of the river near the highway. Sheriff’s Office, Fire District 3, and Cascade Ambulance personnel responded and life saving efforts continued. The subject was transported to Cascade Medical Center in Leavenworth, WA. He was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Witnesses to the incident advise the subject’s inflatable raft, which is designed to turn completely over in the water as needed and then right itself, had tipped to the side while he was in the rapids. The subject was ejected out of his thigh harness safety belt and into the water. The victim was wearing a personal floatation device, wet suit, and helmet at the time of the accident.

The deceased is a 54 year old male. His name is being withheld until family members are notified.

Lake Chelan ready to welcome summer visitors

E-mail Print PDF

pudNear normal 2013 spring run-off means conditions favorable for summer recreation

Chelan PUD met its May 1 target for the level of Lake Chelan and forecasts indicate that the lake levels will provide the community and vacationers access to boat launches for the Memorial Day holiday and a full lake by Fourth of July and on through early September.

Information about lake level and boat launches is on the PUD’s website.

Lake Chelan draws thousands of visitors and residents to its shores each year. Whether the purpose is to fish, swim, boat or simply meander along its shores, the lake is a popular gathering place. It’s also a vital part of the Chelan County PUD network of hydroelectric resources.

Lake Chelan is the reservoir for the Lake Chelan Hydro Project.  Managing the level of popular Lake Chelan requires balancing seven objectives in the operating license that together provide recreation, protect fish, reduce erosion and restore year-round flows to the Chelan River.

Water from the lake flows through a two-mile-long tunnel to the powerhouse at Chelan Falls where it generates clean, renewable electricity.  It also feeds the Chelan River and flows through new fish habitat in the lower reach of the river near its confluence with the Columbia.

“This year’s conditions are favorable for recreation, as well as for meeting the other terms of our operating license,” said Kirk Hudson, Generation and Transmission managing director, adding that the PUD is taking into consideration customer concerns as it reviews how it manages lake levels.

“We understand the recreation and economic value of Lake Chelan and what it means to our customer-owners in the Chelan Valley,” Hudson said. “We can’t control the weather, but we can make sure the operating decisions that affect lake levels are based on the best information available.”

Operating guidelines and updated forecasting tools are helping the PUD provide accurate and consistent forecasts for lake levels, he said.

The result is that now lake level forecasts are made in a range of what’s most likely – that is 90 percent probability.  The June 1 range for lake level is 1,092.8 to 1,097.3 feet above sea level.

Managing the level of the lake is not an exact science, he said.  It involves a series of forecasts and calculations, with the added uncertainty of weather. However, updated tools and additional information will help the PUD provide information that is more useful for residents and visitors, Hudson said.

The District continues to look into ways to maintain higher lake levels through September, when many residents have said they most enjoy the benefits of living on the lake and a time when wine industry tourism is growing. More information on those efforts will be shared with the community as it is available.

I-5 bridge investigation continues; detour available Friday morning

E-mail Print PDF

wsdot-logoMOUNT VERNON – A portion of a bridge on Interstate 5 collapsed into the Skagit River near Mount Vernon Thursday, and drivers are asked to avoid the area as national and state investigators work to determine the cause.

Washington State Department of Transportation crews will have a signed detour in place by 4 a.m. to guide drivers through the area.

Reports indicate a span near the north end of the bridge was damaged by a commercial vehicle. State officials are investigating, and National Transportation Safety Board investigators are expected to arrive before noon Friday.

With more than 67,000 drivers using this stretch of I-5 each day, WSDOT asks drivers to avoid the area or expect long backups. Crews will monitor traffic patterns and make adjustments to the detour route as needed.

Once NTSB officials complete their investigation, WSDOT will move forward on removing debris from the Skagit River and replacing the bridge.
