CHELAN FIRE AND RESCUE Residential Fires
Chelan Fire and Rescue responded to two residential structure fires over the last month. Both of these were a result of cigarette butts being discarded outside of the residence and not being completely out. In both cases, the discarded cigarette butts caught material outside of the house on fire and it spread to the structure. The fires were detected as they grew in size and started burning the exterior walls of the homes.

In each case the structures received damage to the exterior walls and had the potential, if they had gone undetected, to have burned the house down. One home was occupied at the time of the fire and the occupant was able to knock the fire down prior to CFR arrival. No one was home at the other structure, but an alert neighbor called 911 and CFR units were able to arrive and extinguish the fire just as the front window was breaking out. This would have allowed the fire to move inside the structure. In both cases the fire was kept to a minimum and both homes suffered minor damage.
Chelan Fire and Rescue would like to strongly encourage folks to make sure cigarettes are completely out before discarding them. Cigarette butts should be discarded into a fire proof container and be sure it is not sitting against any combustible material.
