Scholarship offers up to $3,000 for high school seniors active in drug, alcohol abuse prevention
Washington state high school seniors graduating in spring 2012 have until Feb. 15 to apply for the Andrew York Memorial Scholarship, which is offered to students who are active in programs to prevent drug and alcohol abuse.
The scholarship is managed by the Community Foundation of North Central Washington and honors Chelan PUD journeyman lineman Andrew York who died in 2000 after being hit while on the job by a drunken driver.
Applications are available on the Community Foundation’s website at www.cfncw.org.
Scholarship funds are raised each year at the annual Andrew York Lineman Rodeo, held the third Saturday in June in Wenatchee, Wash. The mission of the rodeo is to increase opportunities for public education and awareness about the tragedies caused by impaired driving and the dangers of not wearing seat belts. The lineman rodeo has provided more than $17,500 in scholarships
High school seniors in the state of Washington are eligible to apply. A selection committee evaluates the applications and decides on the recipient(s) based on community service, commitment to preventing drug and alcohol abuse, acceptance into an accredited college, university and/or trade school, and financial need.
Last year’s recipients were Athena Schlyer, Cascade High School, Leavenworth; Raquel Ramos, Eastmont High School, East Wenatchee; Jessica Jackson, Raymond High School, Raymond; and Mallory Gillin, Wenatchee High School, Wenatchee.
The 2012 scholarship(s) will be awarded in May.
