Sheriff Brian Burnett and the Chelan County Department of Emergency Management wish to remind the public to be prepared for a potential significant wind event in the Wenatchee Valley and other areas of Chelan/Douglas Counties this afternoon.
The National Weather Service in Spokane is predicting high winds for the area beginning late Tuesday afternoon and continuing into Wednesday morning. If the extreme high winds make it to the valley floors, we could experience gusts up to 60–70mph, with sustained winds of 40mph. There is a chance the very high winds may stay above the valleys.
High winds can topple trees which potentially creates power outages. Damage to lightweight structures and high profile vehicles can also occur.
To prepare for the event, the Chelan County Department of Emergency Management would like to remind the public of the following:
- Be prepared for power outages in your areas. If you need to use a generator or gas stove, keep the device in a well ventilated area.
- Stay inside during times of high winds.
- Do not use 9-1-1 for non-life threatening situations. Non-emergent reports of downed trees or other hazards should be called into RIVERCOM on the 509-663-9911 line. If you need to report a power outage, call the Chelan County PUD dispatch center at 1-877-783-8123.
- Keep cellular phones and other wireless devices fully charged prior to the weather event.
- If you have family or friends on oxygen or other services at home that require power, prepare accordingly.
- Stock up on drinking water and food supplies prior to the event.
- Limit your travel on local roadways.
We hope that this weather event will not create significant interruption of power and services in our area, however it is always better to be prepared.
Local emergency services managers are aware of the potential for a significant weather situation and will prepare accordingly.
Any reports of significant damage to property that have occurred after the event can be reported the Department of Emergency Management via phone (below), or our website www.chelandem.org
