sheriffsmSheriff Mike Harum reports on Sunday August 29, 2010 deputies were advised of a missing person in the Stromberg Canyon area north of Leavenworth.

John D. Ramsey (27yoa) of Leavenworth was overdue by more than 24-hours after going on a day hike beginning early Saturday morning, the 28th. Family members told deputies Ramsey often hikes the area, but always returns the same day. He was not prepared to be out overnight. A vehicle Ramsey had been driving was located off of the Chumstick Highway at Stromberg Canyon Sunday morning. The Sheriff's Office initiated a search for Ramsey late Sunday morning until nightfall and continued the search effort on Monday morning. Approximately 8 persons with the Sheriff's Office volunteer services unit and two members of the US Forest Service assisted in the effort of attempting to locate Ramsey.

His father, Frank Ramsey and two family friends also assisted in the search. Late Saturday afternoon, a pack belonging to Ramsey was located about 200 yards up a wildlife trail above the BNSF railroad tracks at Stromberg Canyon.

On Monday at 1:04pm, Ramsey was located when he walked out of Stromberg Canyon. He was very dehydrated and had received numerous scratches on his face, upper body, and legs from hiking through heavily forested terrain, but was otherwise in good health. Ramsey told searchers he had planned on hiking up to the top of the ridge above Stromberg Canyon early Saturday morning and then returning down the same path. Ramsey advised he became disoriented after reaching the top of the ridge and he ended up hiking to the west instead of back to the east as he had intended. Ramsey said he was stuck in an area for a period of time and could not figure out how to hike back toward the main canyon road. Ramsey drank stream water during his two day trek.
