ImageChelan County Sheriff - Sheriff Mike Harum reports on December 19th at 0657 hours Daniel Erickson (40 yoa) from Kirkland, WA advised he and three of his friends turned over their raft in the Wenatchee River about two miles west of the Alps Candy store in Tumwater Canyon. Erickson stated they had been trying to boat across the river when the boat flipped over, dumping two of the subjects into the river.

Erickson reported one friend was now stranded on an ice covered rock in the middle of the river and another friend was stranded on the north shore line. Erickson stated he and the fourth friend were able to reach the south shore line were they had originally launched.

EMS personnel, along with deputies responded and located the subjects. Both stranded subjects had become soaking wet from being submerged in the river when the boat flipped over. None of the subjects were wearing a PFD at the time.

Chelan County Sheriff’s deputies from our White Water Rescue Team and members of Osprey River Rafters deployed a river raft, entered the river and rescued both stranded subjects. Both were brought back to safety on the Highway 2 side (north shore line) of the Wenatchee River where EMS crews checked them for hypothermia.

The four men were from the Seattle area and had been trying to boat across the Wenatchee River to go ice climbing on the west side of Tumwater Canyon.
