Harum reports on September 13, 2008 at 1445 hours, Randolph Rantz advised
Rivercom Dispatch Center he found drug paraphernalia near Beehive
Reservoir. Rantz collected the
paraphernalia and drove the item to the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies met with Rantz.
Rantz produce a plastic grocery sack with the item. Deputies looked into the bag recognized the
item as a pipe bomb. Deputies immediately
set-up a perimeter and restricted access.
The device was a 6-8” steel pipe with caps on both
ends. Wires were coming out of both
ends, too. Attached to the steel pipe
was a small, green propane bottle taped to an aerosol can of automotive
starting fluid. The device was wrapped
in a bundle of electrical wire.
Deputies advised the Army EOD team in Yakima, WA. EOD responded and X-rayed the device on
scene. EOD verified a blasting cap
inside the device and the device appeared functional.
EOD collected the device and transported the pipe bomb to
the Sheriff’s Office shooting range, south of Malaga. The EOD utilized C4 to destroy the pipe bomb at 2118 hours.
The investigation
continues into who constructed the device.
The Sheriff’s Office asks, if anyone has information on who built or
left the pipe bomb at Beehive Reservoir, to call Lt. Jerry Moore at
509-667-6840.
