Recent reports from Kenya indicate that at least 300,000 people have been driven from their homes due to the inter-ethnic violence following the December presidential election.  It is estimated that over 100,000 children are now riding out this crisis.  Chelan Rotary, in its commitment to International Service, has learned of two community child care centers located in areas affected by the rioting.  In order to provide care to more children and enhance the existing facilities, the Chelan Club is partnering with a Kenyan Rotary Club which is located in the Rift Valley of western Kenya.

The funds being provided by Lake Chelan Rotary are from the fundraising activities of the Club, including the Century Challenge Bike Ride (www.centuryride.com) conducted the second Saturday in June.  The men and women of Chelan Rotary thank the citizens of the Chelan Valley who generously support the Club activities, so that projects like these in the slums of Kenya can benefit.  For more information on the children’s community care centers a web site can be viewed at www.geocities.com/rafikicaringhome.
