East Wenatchee,WA(MVT) - A failure of the instrument landing system at
Pangborn Memorial Airport caused several Horizon Air flights to be delayed or
cancelled this past weekend.
Two Horizon flights were delayed and 12 flights were
cancelled. Without the instrument
landing system, the bottom of the cloud layer must be 1300ft above ground level
for Horizon to land at Pangborn.
Four flights were delayed in December because of a failure
of the instrument landing system. The
ILS is owned and maintained by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA has been working hard to identify
the cause of these recurring problems.
The current outage began about 1:00 pm on Saturday. The FAA is still working on the system, but
has returned it to service as of 2:00 pm on January 14th.
These problems reinforce the importance of the instrument
landing system. During the 2006-2007
winter season, the instrument landing system saved 48 Horizon Air flights. So far this year, 18 flights have arrived or
departed Pangborn that could not have prior to the installation of the
ILS.
