ImageChelan,WA(CCSD) - Chelan County Sheriff Mike Harum reports on December 7, 2007 at 11:25 a Deputy attempted to make contact with a suspicious occupied vehicle that was parked in the roadway on Crystal View Drive at State Route 150 in Chelan, WA.  As the deputy pulled up behind the black 1998 Volkswagen sports car, the driver drove westbound SR150.  The deputy followed the vehicle and observed the vehicle crossing in and out of both lanes of travel.

The deputy stopped the vehicle and made contact with the Joshua B. Dominguez, a twenty year old male from Wenatchee, WA.  The deputy determined Dominguez had been consuming intoxicants and asked him to submit to field sobriety tests outside the vehicle.  Dominguez got out of his car, but refused the field tests.  Dominguez agreed to submit to a breath test on the deputy’s issued PBT unit.  When the deputy walked to his patrol car to obtain the PBT unit, Dominguez ran to his vehicle and drove away west from the scene.  The deputy followed using his emergency lights and siren to stop Dominguez.

After a short distance  Dominguez stalled his vehicle on SR150.  When the deputy pulled in front of the stalled vehicle, Dominguez immediately placed his car in reverse to turn around on the highway and continued to flee.  As Dominguez was turning he nearly struck another westbound vehicle.  Dominguez continued to flee eastbound on SR 150 at a high rate of speed.  The deputy attempted to overtake the fleeing vehicle, but slowed his speeds when he observed the Volkswagen continuing to accelerate.

The deputy maintained a safe distance behind the Volkswagen.  As Dominguez entered a curve near mile post 6.5, the lights on the Volkswagen went out and Dominguez continued eastbound at a high rate of speed.  When Dominguez entered the right hand curve, his vehicle traveled over the centerline into the oncoming lane colliding head-on with a westbound 1999 Jeep Cherokee occupied by five subjects from the Manson, WA area.

The Dominguez was extricated from the vehicle by Fire District #7 and Lake Chelan EMS personnel who then transported to Lake Chelan Community Hospital.  Dominguez was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.  A 17 year old female passenger in Dominguez’s vehicle suffered abdominal and leg injuries in the collision and was eventually transported to Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, WA

The five occupants of the Jeep Cherokee were also transported to Lake Chelan CommunityHospital.  The driver, a 27 year old female suffered a left wrist injury.  A 39 year old female seated in the rear of the vehicle suffered a fractured right femur and was eventually transported to CWH in Wenatchee.   A 29 year old male that had been the right front passenger in the vehicle suffered a leg injury and was treated at LCCH.  An 11-month old child and a 6 year old child that had been seated in the rear of the vehicle suffered very minor injuries in the collision.  They were treated and released to family members at LCCH in Chelan.

The investigation into this incident continues by both the State Patrol and the Chelan County Sheriff’s Office.
