Washington Transportation
Secretary attends Pres. Obama’s jobs summit, participates in infrastructure investment breakout session
WSDOT - With most highway construction projects wrapped up for the winter, it is clear that investments by the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act have helped maintain and create jobs in Washington State.
The Washington State Department of Transportation this week released updated Recovery Act employment and payroll numbers that are reported monthly to the US Department of Transportation. Washington’s workers earned $10.9 million in payroll for 284,192 hours of work in October. Since the Recovery Act was passed in February, workers have logged more than 1 million hours on Washington stimulus projects, earning nearly $40 million in wages.

Keep the Home Fires Burning…in the Fireplace
Written by Esther Hernandez, Deputy State Fire Marshal
Thursday, 03 December 2009
Washington State Fire Marshal - As temperatures drop, the threat of home fires rises due to the increased use of alternative heating sources, such as space heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves. While these alternative methods of heating are certainly acceptable, they are also a major contributing factor in residential fires.
Fire departments in Washington State reported that approximately half of all home heating fires occur during the winter months. Heating equipment was involved in over 1,300 structure fires in 2008, resulting in two fire deaths and nearly $6.9 million in property loss. “Many of these fires can be prevented. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the fire risks when heating with wood and solid fuels,” says State Fire Marshal Mike Matlick. “By educating themselves about the equipment and following some simple home heating tips, residents can help prevent fires.”

Chelan County PUD (CCPUD) - News from the meeting of the Chelan County PUD Commission Nov. 30, 2009:
PUD spending and revenues both drop in final budget
Chelan County PUD budget trimming for next year continues as the latest forecasts indicate revenues for 2010 will be lower than previously thought just a few weeks ago. It is still too early to tell whether a new temporary surcharge or other rate increase will be recommended once spring runoff is known and the overall economic picture becomes clearer, but the PUD is approaching 2010 in "preservation mode."
Commissioners were presented the final proposed 2010 budget Monday afternoon, and they are scheduled to take action next Monday.
